DROWNING IN A LEAKY AIRCON? HERE’S HOW TO HANDLE IT

When it comes to aircon water leak, you’re not alone. In fact, around 90% of all aircons leak at some point in their lifetime. If your home or office has a leaking aircon and you don’t know how to handle it, then this blog post is for you! We will go over what causes an air conditioner leak and the different types of repairs that are available. Learn about what tools might be needed as well as possible solutions for fixing a leaky AC unit so that it doesn’t happen again and you remain tension free and hassle free in all the entire summer.

Aircon water Leak Causes

There are three main reasons why an air conditioner leaks water. Here they are:

Clogged drain line

Pipes that contain dirty condensate could also be at fault if the leak is caused by trash or other obstructions. Debris in your drain line can cause a blockage, which will result in excess water building up in the drain pan. The best way to avoid this is having your pipes regularly cleaned with a hose so that any debris are removed before they have the chance to cause blockage or damage.

A clogged filter can be another possible reason for an aircon water leak, but it only sometimes contributes to an AC unit leaking.

A defective drain valve is the main culprit for aircon leaks. A leaking air conditioner will have a slow buildup of water in the unit’s drip pan under your evaporator coil. The failing seal allows condensate to leak out instead of draining into the pan. Replacing the drain valve should solve this type of problem, but you may have to do it more than once if it keeps happening. Fortunately, cheap and easy fixes are available for this issue so you don’t need to call a repairman every time your AC starts leaking water after a few months.

If any of these factors apply to you, then it’s important that you address them as soon as possible or else risk further damage being done to your aircon system.

Types of Aircon Leak Repairs

There are two main types of repairs for a leaky air conditioner. They are:

Water drainage repair

This type of fix is a straightforward, DIY solution that should take less than an hour to complete. The first thing you need to do is empty the water from the AC’s drip pan. If this will be difficult due to your home or office’s location, then you’ll want to turn off the power at the circuit breaker before attempting this step. Once that’s done, remove all obstructions around the unit and use a shop vacuum or wet/dry vacuum cleaner to suck up as much excess water as possible from the pan. Next, place a bucket underneath where your aircon drain line enters the unit. Use a wrench to loosen and remove the clogged drain valve, clean it with soap and water, reattach it again securely, and finally run some hot water through the air conditioner’s drainage tube until there’s no more condensation inside.

Vapor barrier replacement

While this process is easier than cleaning out a clogged AC drain pipe in terms of tools needed and time spent on the job, it is slightly more complicated when compared to just draining your AC unit or replacing its drainage valve.
